Myths About Motor Oil

All cars need engine oil to get moving on the road. It keeps the parts of the engine oiled up and protects against corrosion. In addition, the latest oils can protect against junk building up in the engine and causing issues. However, there are some things about engine oil that just aren't true. Here are a few of those myths.

The W in the oil grade stands for weight.
False.
When you purchase a bottle of oil, you want to make sure that the oil has a good thickness or viscosity. You don't want an oil that is too thick, but actually, you want an oil that has less viscosity so that it moves through the engine quickly. In this case, the W actually stands for winter.

When oil turns dark, it means you need to change it.
False.
This doesn't mean that your engine oil is dirty at all. In fact, the opposite is true. The oil will need to be changed when saturated.
